Bela Vista’s nickname – Bixiga – is not very flattering. In Portuguese it means bladder, and refers to an early 20th-century market here that sold tripe to immigrants who could not afford anything better.

By the time São Paulo’s World War I industrial expansion began, Italian, Japanese, and Portuguese immigrants were crowded into cheek-by-jowl tenements in a ring of slums – Brás, Bom Retiro, Bela Vista, and Liberdade – circling the historic Downtown. Even today, these now cleaned-up neighborhoods contain tenements housing strong ethnic communities.
